WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:

  • Static sensitive devices -  Remove from anti-static packaging only when ready to install
  • Burn / Injury warning - Device surface and heatsinks could reach temperatures that could burn and injure. Allow devices to cool before touching.
  • Possible Fire Hazard -  Do not leave controller running unattended, to be installed by knowledgeable individuals only. 
  • Damage to device - Power off main supply before attempting to install or detach any driver module. Avoid cutting off at DC source while motors are running. Do not disconnect motors from main board while powered. Observe correct orientation when mounting driver modules.


Installation Guide:



# INITIAL POWER UP -------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X5 mini V3 ships with the bootloader installed and smoothieware firmware flashed. Only thing it needs to boot properly is the config file on the SD card before power up.

  • Download sample config file and copy to SD card. Insert to micro SD card slot on the board.
  • Move Input Select Jumper to "USB". See wiring diagram for location of jumper.
  • Download Windows driver and keep smoothie driver page open as guide.

With SD card inserted, plug USB cable from PC and confirm the LEDs turn on. Windows will detect a new device plugged in and will try to install drivers. Follow Smoothie's Windows driver guide linked above to install serial USB drivers. If driver installation is successful the SD card will open up in Windows as a drive that you can open from My Computer. You can use this Windows' mounted drive for transferring gcode files and uploading new firmware.

You may now use the wiring guide linked above to wire up your controller. Make sure to replace the Input Select Jumper to INT from USB. This allows the board to be powered by the internal regulator.

# STEPPER DRIVER SETUP -------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X5 mini V3 accepts pololu profile stepper drivers. You can use any drivers with the same compatible footprint but digipot current adjustment though firmware will only work with Panucatt drivers.

Set micro step jumpers.

Each driver slot has 3 jumper headers to set micro stepping. Most drivers use 2 or 3 jumpers to set the desired configuration. See your driver's documentation for details on which jumpers to place.

The jumpers are labeled M1,M2 and M3. On some drivers these are called MS1, MS2 and MS3 or M0,M1 and M2. Jumpers are placed across each header pair according to the desired setting for each driver.

Select the table for your stepper driver model.
OFF = No jumper
ON = With jumper


Driver Orientation.

For Panucatt Stepper Drivers, just match the pins to the socket on the board with the extra pins on the shorter edge of the board toward the Motor headers. See picture below for reference. Dont forget to install the heatsinks.


 For 3rd party drivers like those from Pololu, Stepsticks, or SilentStepsticks. Match the pin designation as shown below to correctly orient the driver. Just a reminder that you need to manually set the current for each stepper driver. Digital pot adjustment work on Panucatt stepper drivers only.

Check and double check before inserting the driver, possible driver damage if installed incorrectly.
